PostHeaderIcon Wet Weather Driving – How NOT to Aquaplane

With the roads starting to get wet and greasy its important to start thinking about how safe your tyres and brakes are.

Aquaplaning is when a layer of water gets between the rubber of your tires and the road surface. The tread on your tyres helps to disperse this layer of water. If however you have little or no tread left then you are more prone to getting into trouble.

If aquaplaning occurs on all four of your tyres at the same time, your car stops being an automotive in control and becomes an uncontrollable sled!

Here are some tips how NOT to Aquaplane

  • Ensure your tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure
  • Make certain you have adequate tread depth on your tyres
  • SLOW DOWN
  • Keep clear from puddles
  • Follow the tracks of the vehicle in front of you

If you are unsure about the state of your tyres the team here at tyresforsale.co.nz would recommend that you get them checked by a professional without delay. If you need a price on tyres for your car let us know by leaving a comment after this page, or you can check all our tyres for sale here.

PostHeaderIcon Tyre Fitter – What does it involve?

A career in the Tyre industry is something that not a lot of people strive to do. A relatively easy industry to get a job or start in though, with plenty of opportunities for those with a bit of ethusiasm.

The starting position in a Tyreshop is normally a Tyre fitter. If you have no experience it can take from several months to years even to become proficient in this area, and if you are customer facing then there are a lot of customer service and sales aspects of the role as well.

I personally started working in a tyre shop around the age of 13 part time. It was a Saturday morning, school holidays position that enabled me to get a grip on the art of fitting tyres, fixing punctures, and balancing wheels whilst also sweeping the floors and cleaning up.

Once I reached the age of 16, with little joy in the scholastic world, I left school and home as well. Having had previous experience fitting tyres I quite easily scored my first full time job at a little Firestone shop in the middle of Newmarket. Welcome to the real world, I was now in the big time earning 7.50 an hour and could afford to go flatting and buy a crappy car.

Once you have landed a job as a Tyre fitter a world of options as to where your career may head begin to open up. You can gain experience as a Wheel Alignment/Suspension Technician, become a heavy Truck Tyre fitter, a leading hand or even a Store Manager with a company car.

It can be tough, labour intensive work especially if you are working on heavy truck and/or tractor tyres. Some of them are very large, heavy and dangerous as well. Its dirty and not a job that is going to earn you much above the average wage.

If you are out of work and want a regular job that puts a roof over your head I would definitely recommend that you find out more about it. Most of the major chains have employment information on their websites, or you could post a job wanted advert on the popular www.jobhunters.co.nz website.

PostHeaderIcon One only set of 245/40 r19 RE 050A Bridgestones

Very hard to come by these days are the 245/40 19 Bridgestones and to be honest they normally don’t last long. The vehicle this set came off had done exactly 11 Kms. Thats right they have driven from the car dealership to the tyreshop.

If you buy them direct from a firestone/bridgestone dealer you would be paying hundreds of dollars more for a set ( our set is only 1200 dollars.)

PostHeaderIcon Tyres for Sale Pre Easter Check List

With easter just around the corner its definitely time to have a quick check of your tyres before you head off for your long weekend. Its important you get right onto it, as there are only a couple of days left to get any tyre problems fixed.

  • Ensure your Tyre Pressures are correct as to your vehicles specifications.
  • Make sure treadwear is even, and check for any defects or nails, screws etc lodged in the sidewall or tread area.
  • The legal limit is 1.5mm so make sure you have 2mm or more tread on your tyres, across the entire width and around the entire circumference.
  • Make sure your spare is in the boot and pumped up!

Drive safely and best wishes this easter from the team at tyresforsale.co.nz

PostHeaderIcon Tyres for Sale March/April Update

Hi everyone, March has been our biggest month since we started. We have recently qualified to be a trademe top seller, which is not an easy feat by any means!

Stock levels are challenging to put it bluntly, we are totally out of 245/45 18′s right now, however do come across the occasional set which normally sells within a day.

215/70 16 Geolanders have been moving out the door at a great rate of knots, down to our last couple of sets on these.

245/70 r 16 Bridgestone Desert Duellers have continued to be our biggest seller, luckily we have several sets of these in stock, and seem to have no problems getting more.

Other sizes are ticking along as normal, we did have a run on 215/50 17′s though and ended up selling nearly 100 tyres to one customer! We had to get tyres from all around New Zealand to fufill the order, and managed to work out the logistics of that within a good time frame.

If you are looking for the best tyre deals right now in NZ click through here to our trade me listings, hopefully we will soon be doing business.

PostHeaderIcon Tyre Price Increase 28 February – Buy Tires NOW!!

I got the dreaded letter in the mail today from my suppliers. Due to the ever rising prices of rubber and oil etc, Tyre prices are going up starting on the 28-February.

We will continue to sell at our pre price rise prices as long as we can, but no doubt will have to bump things up a little.

What do you think of tyre prices in general compared to when you brought them in the past? The problem I think is that as cars increase in performance and specs, unfortunately so do the tyres.

If only Tyres were like television’s they seem to just keep getting bigger but cheaper!

You can check our listings here- still at the time of writing at pre increase prices.

PostHeaderIcon Minimum Tread Depth

How do you know when its time to replace your tyres? Well here at tyres for sale we recommend that you replace them before they get down to the minimum tread depth. Safety should be your primary concern not trying to wing your way through your next warrant of fitness and hoping for a “friendly” WOF inspector.

The legal minimum for your tyres is 1.5mm and this needs to be across 75% of the tyre width, as well as around the entire tyre. There are other things that can mean your tyre won’t pass a warrant and they include..

  • Unsafe cuts ( The chords of the tyres could be exposed )
  • Bulges
  • Seperated tyre ( This is when the steel belts go out of shape )
  • Sidewall cuts, bulges
  • Unsafe tyre repairs ( e.g the famous tyre plug )

Or pretty much anything that could make the tyre unsafe.

Its actually not that hard to check your own tyres, just get out a match stick, turn your steering wheel to hard lock to check the front ones. For the rear tyres you may need to get down on your hand and knees. Run your hands carefully around the sidewalls to ensure there are no lumps or bumps.

PostHeaderIcon Bridgestone Tyres – Are they the best?

I was wondering today which tyre brands are most people searching for, compared to what I have to offer. Mainly I sell Bridgestones, yokohamas and ocasionally michelins, and Hankooks.

Well in NZ the most searched for brands in the last month ( According to Google ) are in the following order.

Dunlop
Firestone
Bridgestone
Michelin
Goodyear
Pirelli
Hankook
Yokohama

Even further down the list were the likes of Falken,Nankang, Kumho etc

I then tried the same thing but this time used the United States as the location. The list was quite different.

Goodyear
Firestone
Michelin
Bridgestone
Dunlop
Toyo
Michelin
Yokohama

Well knowing this helps one realize which I guess are the most popular brands as thats what people are searching for but is one brand any better than the other?

I myself have always driven on Goodyear, Bridgestones and Yokohamas with the odd dunlop thrown in here and there. To be quite honest I have not had any problems with any of them. When selling tyres for the Commodore SV6′s we have a choice between Bridgestones and Yokohamas with the Bridgestones being a little more expensive.

A few clients that have driven on both seem to prefer the Bridgestones.

Well I guess everyone has their own opinions when it comes to tyres. But what to you think?

Bridgestone? Or…

Yokohama.
